As a Builder, you manage the construction, alteration, and renovation of residential and commercial buildings. You coordinate trades, materials, and schedules to ensure work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to the required standards.

Builders may work under contract or as Subcontractors and often specialise in particular types of building work.

Many start as tradespeople and move into the role after gaining practical experience and completing the necessary qualifications.

A typical day may involve:

  • Interpreting architectural drawings and specifications
  • Coordinating resources, materials, plant and equipment
  • Consulting with architects, engineering professionals and other professionals, and technical and trades workers
  • Negotiating with building owners, property developers and Subcontractors
  • Preparing tenders and contract bids
  • Implementing coordinated work programs for sites
  • Adhering to building legislation and standards of performance, quality, cost and safety
  • Submitting plans to local authorities
  • Overseeing the standard and progress of subcontractor work
  • Arranging building inspections
